Abstract

Abstract The United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021–2030) aims to generate knowledge and scientific understanding of the oceans. Its primary goal is to reverse coastal and oceanic degradation and promote sustainable development. Among its objectives is the creation of interfaces between science and policy, as well as the development of solutions to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. This project proposes a descriptive, qualitative humanistic research initiative focused on understanding vulnerable coastal groups in the state of Campeche during the period 2025–2027. The research will be interdisciplinary, encompassing social, cultural, and historical dimensions, productive activities, natural resource use, and ancestral knowledge (both oral and written). The methodology is grounded in active listening and openness to dialogue with diverse knowledge systems. The study will center on the foundational aspects of community life, human rights, personal dignity, and socio-environmental systems, as well as shared and individual values related to the coast and the sea. These insights will support the development of new relationships in response to the transformations brought by climate change, private investment, resource scarcity, and the degradation of ecosystem services. Ultimately, the project seeks to strengthen community capacities for reducing vulnerability and enhancing adaptation to climate change.
